Future Class of 2014,

Welcome back !  Hope your summer was positive and restful.  At this time, every student  should have a high school directory and the optional Specialized high School Handbook.  You will start applying to high schools during the first few days of your eighth grade school year and all throughout the Thanksgiving break.  This September, you will have the opportunity to sign up for auditions, the SHSAT (Specialized High School Admissions Test), and other early action programs indicated in your directory.

As explained, I hope you have made wise use of your time this summer and did your thorough research in formulating educated opinions by:

Traveling to schools

Participating in guided tours

Attending open houses and making note of future ones

Looking at the internet and communicating regularly with your parents

The time is upon us to be ready and prepared to proceed with  the many wonderful high school programs the NYC Department of Education offers.  Do not waste valuable time in determining the next four years of academic commitment.

All 8th grade classes will receive monthly workshops to help prepare for the high school application process.  For additional support throughout this process, the Guidance Office in room 131 will be open daily for appointments (with a pass) during lunch for high school help.  Additionally, High School Night is tentatively set for the evening of September 17th.  Try and be present, with a parent or older relative.  And daytime parent workshops will be formed. More specific details will be made available shortly.

Make note: The online high school directory has translated versions of the materials handed to you.   Use www.hopstop.com or mta.info for travel information and times.

Wishing you a successful 8th grade school year,

Mrs. Kouzounas, Guidance Counselor
